From an offer to cash

How matched
betting works

You make use of the bookmaker's promotion, rather than trying to outsmart the odds.

Matching the two sides lets you calculate the outcome before the event starts.

01

Find an offer you can use

A bookmaker might offer a free bet after you place a qualifying bet. Check that you're eligible and that you understand what the offer asks you to do.

02

Unlock the free bet

Place the qualifying bet and match it on a betting exchange, where you can bet against the same result. A matched-betting calculator works out the stakes. There is usually a small qualifying cost, which you include in your overall profit calculation.

03

Turn the free bet into cash

Use the free bet and match it with another opposing bet. Because the bookmaker supplies the free-bet stake, you can keep part of its value whichever side wins. The amount depends on the odds, commission and offer terms.

Why I built Matched Betting Beast

I started as a student.

I started matched betting as a student and made tens of thousands of pounds with free bets and arbitrage opportunities from differences in odds. I'm building Matched Betting Beast to share what I learned, with clear guides that take you from your first offer to doing it for yourself.

For a guided start, my recommendation is Outplayed. Keep Matched Betting Beast alongside it for free explanations, examples and calculators.

An example with real numbers

A £200 free bet.
£154.33 to keep.

This illustration shows how matching a free bet can turn most of its value into cash. It is not a live offer. The £154.33 is after exchange commission, but before any cost of qualifying for the free bet.

If your team wins

Your free bet pays out.

The bookmaker pays £800. Your opposing exchange bet loses £645.67.

You keep £154.33

If your team doesn't win

Your exchange bet pays out.

The £200 free bet expires without a payout. Your exchange bet wins £154.33 after commission.

You keep £154.33

The sporting result changes which account pays you, not the amount you keep in this example.

See the calculation and what you need

This uses a £200 stake-not-returned free bet at decimal odds of 5.00, a fully matched exchange lay bet of £157.48 at odds of 5.10, and 2% commission on exchange winnings. The £200 free-bet stake itself is not returned by the bookmaker.

You need £645.67 in the exchange account to cover the lay bet's liability. That is money set aside for the opposing bet, not an extra fee. The illustration assumes you already have the eligible free bet, both bets settle on the same result, there are no other positions in that exchange market, and winnings are withdrawable. Any qualifying cost reduces the final profit.

Different odds and offer terms give different amounts. Our guides will show you how to calculate your own figures and check both bets before confirming them.

Good questions

Before your first offer.

What is Outplayed, and is the trial free?

Outplayed is a matched-betting training and tools service, formerly known as Profit Accumulator. It currently advertises a free trial. Our buttons take you to Outplayed, where you can check what is included, the current membership charges and cancellation terms before signing up.

Is it the same as ordinary gambling?

You're not gambling on who wins. Instead of trying to predict a result, you cover the two opposing sides and use the bookmaker's free bet to create value. With a suitable offer and correctly matched stakes, you can calculate the same profit whichever sporting result occurs.

It still involves placing real bets with gambling operators. The distinction is the method, not an exemption from their rules: offer conditions, matched bets, costs and consistent settlement still matter.

Can I lose money?

Author's view

In theory no. With matched betting you take both sides of the bet and guarantee a profit. In reality, human error, changing odds and unmatched bets introduce some elements of risk, but these can be overcome with practice, tools and by following the advice we share in our guides.

Read the results disclaimer

Do I need money upfront?

Yes. You'll usually need money for a qualifying bet and funds in the exchange account to cover the opposing bet. That exchange amount is called liability and is held until the event settles. Start with an offer that suits the money you can comfortably set aside; bigger offers can need a bigger balance.

Use your own spare funds, not borrowed money or money needed for bills.

How much time does it take?

Your first offers take longer while you set up accounts and learn the steps. Once you're familiar with the process, you can work through individual offers in short sessions whenever it suits you. Allow time to check the details rather than rushing to meet a daily target.

How much can I make?

I made tens of thousands of pounds as a student through free bets and arbitrage opportunities from differences in odds. That's my own experience, not an average or a promise of what you'll earn. Your results depend on the offers you're eligible for, the odds, costs and the time you put in. The useful part is being able to calculate each suitable offer before deciding whether to take it.

Are matched-betting winnings tax-free?

For individuals in the UK, betting winnings are generally tax-free. HMRC explains that having a system or being successful at betting does not, by itself, make it a taxable trade.

Income from running a business, selling services or affiliate commissions is different and may be taxable. Other countries have their own rules. Read HMRC's guidance, and get advice if your circumstances are more complicated.

Do I need to be in the UK?

Our guides are written primarily for a UK audience. If you're elsewhere, you can still learn the method, but check local laws, the minimum betting age and which bookmakers, exchanges and offers are available to you.
