A free bet is only useful while it is live and on the market you need. The awkward part is rarely finding the token. It is remembering which £10 token expires tonight, which one is confined to a Bet Builder, and whether its stake comes back with the winnings.

Treat every free bet as a small contract with a deadline. Record it when it appears, read the restrictions, choose the correct calculator mode and keep proof of the final bet. That takes a minute and prevents the familiar discovery that yesterday's "free money" has quietly become £0.

The short answer

For each token, record the credit time, exact expiry, token denomination, eligible sport and market, minimum odds, whether the stake is returned, and what happens after a void or cash out. Do this before opening an oddsmatcher. If any field is missing, the token is not ready to use.

The deadline shown in the account is the one that matters. Sky Bet's current help page says expiry timescales are listed in the promotional terms when a customer opts in, and the remaining time can also be seen when placing a bet.[2] Other operators arrange their wallets differently, so use the live terms and account display rather than an old guide or screenshot.

Build a label for every token

Copy these details into your tracker as soon as the reward arrives:

  1. Identity: operator, promotion name and the account's token description.
  2. Value: one £20 token is not necessarily interchangeable with two £10 tokens. Record each denomination separately.
  3. Credit time: note when the reward actually appeared, not merely when the qualifying bet settled.
  4. Expiry: record the date, exact time and timezone if shown. "Seven days" needs a starting point.
  5. Eligible use: sport, pre-match or in-play status, single or multiple, Bet Builder, racing, exchange, and any excluded market.
  6. Odds rule: minimum and maximum odds, plus whether every leg of a multiple must qualify.
  7. Return type: stake not returned (SNR), stake returned (SR), cash, or another bonus balance.
  8. Settlement rules: what a void, non-runner, cash out, dead heat or abandoned event does to the token.

The ASA identifies eligibility, wagering requirements, time limits, minimum odds and bet types as conditions that may need to appear clearly and upfront in gambling promotion advertising.[1] Those are exactly the fields a matched bettor needs. A headline value without them is not enough to calculate a return.

Give each token its own label. The value is only one field among the deadline, market and settlement rules.

Work backwards from the deadline

An expiry time is the last acceptable moment under the operator's rule, not your target time for placing the bet. Leave room for market suspension, thin exchange liquidity, changing odds and an account session that decides to log you out at the worst possible moment.

Check whether the terms require the free bet to be placed before expiry or also settled by then. Check whether the event itself must start inside a stated period. These are different rules. A token placed on a match next week may be valid under one promotion and rejected under another.

Use three tracker states: "unread", "ready" and "used". An unread token has not passed the terms check. A ready token has a suitable market and enough exchange money. A used token has an accepted bookmaker receipt and matching exchange bet. Do not mark it used because it disappeared from the wallet.

Sky Bet says expired tokens can remain visible in its rewards area even though they no longer appear in the betting wallet, and it points customers to open and settled bets to confirm use.[2] The useful lesson applies anywhere: wallet presence, expiry and actual bet acceptance are separate facts.

Check the market before the price

A high conversion rating on the wrong market is worthless. First confirm that the token appears against the exact selection in the betslip. Then compare the bookmaker market with the exchange market, including the event, participant, period, extra time, place terms and settlement rule.

Some wallets show only tokens eligible for the current bet. Sky Bet's help page gives the simple example that a football token will not appear on a cricket bet, and notes that some free bets are restricted to particular bet types.[2] Do not force a missing token by choosing a vaguely similar market.

Minimum odds are also token-specific. The threshold may apply to the overall multiple, each leg, the price accepted after a change, or the selection before a boost. The minimum-odds guide explains how to compare decimal and fractional boundaries. Save the accepted bookmaker odds with the bet receipt.

SNR or stake returned changes the calculation

Most sports free bets used for matched betting are SNR, but never select that calculator mode by habit. Sky Bet's current general rules say its free-bet tokens cannot be withdrawn and that the free-bet stake is not returned with winnings.[2] That supports SNR mode for a token governed by those rules. It does not prove the treatment of a token from another operator.

Suppose a hypothetical £10 token is used at decimal odds of 5.00. If it is SNR and wins, the bookmaker returns £40.00 of winnings because the £10 promotional stake is withheld. If it is SR and wins, the gross return is £50.00 because the stake comes back. The £10.00 difference changes the lay stake, liability and final profit.

Those figures are a checked illustration, not a live offer. The SNR versus stake-returned guide has the full side-by-side method. Select the mode from the token wording, not from the size of the credit or what the operator did last month.

Split rewards are several deadlines, not one balance

A promotion advertised as £30 in free bets may arrive as three £10 tokens with different permitted uses. One might be for a football single, another for a Bet Builder and another for racing. Even if they share an expiry time, each needs its own row because each produces its own bookmaker receipt and exchange hedge.

Do not combine token values in your calculator unless the bookmaker genuinely lets you apply them to one bet. Do not add cash to a token merely to reach a preferred stake without checking how the mixed bet will settle. The clean method is one token, one eligible back bet, one confirmed hedge, one record.

This also stops a small token hiding behind a large one in the wallet. Sort by expiry first, then by how hard the restriction will be to satisfy. A general sports token expiring tomorrow may be easier to place than a Bet Builder token expiring next week.

Work left to right and stop if the token, market or accepted bet does not match the plan.

Voids, cash out and rejected bets

Do not assume a void returns the free bet. Some terms re-credit a token, some return it with the old expiry, some exclude it, and some handle a void selection inside a multiple differently. Check before choosing an event with a plausible postponement or non-runner risk.

A cash-out button is not a correction tool. It may invalidate promotion qualification, return less than the planned value or leave the exchange hedge open. If the wrong bookmaker bet is accepted, stop and calculate from the accepted receipt. The cash-out guide covers that decision, while the void-bet guide separates bookmaker and exchange settlement.

If the token vanishes but no valid receipt appears, do not place it again blindly. Check open bets, settled bets, reward history and the wider account history. Contact the operator if those records disagree. A screenshot of the token label and betslip is useful evidence; it is not a substitute for an accepted bet reference.

Keep proof without confusing bonus and cash

Save the promotional terms, token label, accepted bookmaker receipt, exchange receipt and final settlements. Record the cash ultimately returned, not the token's headline value. A £10 SNR token is not £10 withdrawable cash.

The Gambling Commission says promotion terms should be accessible before sign-up and, after play starts, within one click from the bonus area of the account.[4] It also says players should be told when they are using restricted funds and what restrictions apply.[4] If the account display is unclear, pause rather than inventing a rule.

Your own deposited money remains distinct from a bonus. Gambling Commission guidance says players must be allowed to withdraw their deposit balance when a bonus is pending or active, subject to general regulatory obligations, and requires deposit and bonus balances to be shown separately.[5] Do not wager cash just because a promotional token is about to expire.

The five-minute token routine

  1. Open the rewards wallet at the start of the session and record every new token.
  2. Save the live terms and complete the token label before searching for a match.
  3. Sort by deadline, then reject any token whose market or settlement rule is unclear.
  4. Use the correct normal, SNR or SR calculator mode and check exchange liquidity.
  5. Apply the intended token in the final betslip. Recheck event, market, odds and stake.
  6. Place the bookmaker bet, confirm its accepted receipt, then place and confirm the hedge.
  7. Update the row to used and attach both references. Reconcile both settlements later.

Add the routine to your daily and weekly matched-betting checks. If the token came from a qualifying promotion, keep it beside the original qualifying-bet and conversion record. The audit trail should show how the reward was earned, used and turned into cash.

Use the tools after reading the token

Outplayed's calculators and matching tools can help find and size a suitable hedge. They cannot decide whether your personal token permits that market or whether it expires at 23:59 tonight. Read and label the reward first, then use the tool for the numbers.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Free-bet token FAQs

When does a free bet expire?

Use the exact date and time shown in the live promotion terms or account wallet. Check what starts the clock and whether the bet must only be placed or must also settle before the deadline.

Can I use two free-bet tokens on one bet?

Only if the operator's betslip and terms expressly allow it. Treat split rewards as separate tokens by default, with one record and hedge for each accepted bet.

Do I get the free-bet stake back if it wins?

Not with an SNR token. An SR token does return it. Read the token terms and choose the calculator mode from that wording.

What happens if my free bet is void?

Operator terms differ. Check whether the token is re-credited, what expiry applies and how a void selection inside a multiple is handled. Verify the account record before placing anything else.

Should I use a poor match before expiry?

Compare the likely conversion with the cost and risk of the available market. Never add an unsuitable bet, exceed your budget or leave an unmatched position merely to rescue a token.
