An old bookmaker account usually does not become "new" again because you forgot the password, closed it, stopped using it or left it empty for years. Welcome-offer eligibility comes from the operator's current promotion terms and account history, not from how old the account feels.
The safe rule is simple: find the old account first, read the live definition of a new customer, and ask support before depositing or betting if anything is unclear. Do not open another account to test the answer. A duplicate account can turn a doubtful offer into a definite account problem.
Can an old account qualify for a welcome offer?
Sometimes, but only when the live terms clearly allow it or the operator confirms that your account qualifies. There is no general UK rule saying an account becomes new after six months, a year or any other period.
Current terms show why a universal answer would be wrong. Sky Bet says customers who currently or previously held any of its named Sky Betting and Gaming product accounts are existing customers.[1] SBK's current page applies its own test: it limits the offer to new customers and excludes existing Smarkets Exchange users.[2]
Those definitions are not interchangeable. One operator may look across several products. Another may connect a sportsbook and exchange. A third may focus on whether you previously registered, deposited, claimed an offer or held an account under the same operator. Read the definition attached to the offer you actually intend to use.
What "new customer" can mean
"New customer" sounds obvious until the small print starts doing useful work. Check whether the terms refer to any of these:
- Never registered: a previous account can make you existing even if it was never funded.
- No previous account with named products: one login or old account elsewhere in the group may count.
- First deposit: a welcome offer may be tied to the account's first ever eligible deposit, not the next deposit after reopening.
- First bet: the qualifier may have to be the first accepted bet. Sky Bet's current offer says subsequent bets do not count.[1]
- One promotion per person or household: the offer can have limits beyond the account itself.
- Invited or selected accounts: an existing customer promotion may look like a welcome offer but use a different eligibility route.
Do not stop at the headline. The ASA treats eligibility restrictions such as "new customers only" as significant conditions that should be clear in gambling promotion advertising.[5] The Gambling Commission likewise says significant conditions should be presented clearly, promptly and prominently, and that terms must not be hidden.[4]
Closed, dormant and forgotten are not the same as new
A closed account is an account the operator has ended or that you asked it to close. A dormant account is usually an existing account with no recent activity. A forgotten account is simply one you have lost track of. None of those labels automatically resets promotional history.
Start with account recovery. Search your email for registration, verification, deposit, withdrawal and promotion messages. Use the operator's official username or password recovery route. Check old bank statements for the brand name and any operator name that appeared on the transaction. If you can log in, review the account and transaction history before asking about the offer.
Do not rely on a fresh-looking sign-up form. A registration page can accept your details before the operator links them to an old record. That is not proof of eligibility. Nor is a promotional banner, affiliate listing or code box.
A first-deposit condition deserves particular care. SBK currently says its offer applies only to users making their first SBK deposit after the stated start time and who are not existing Smarkets Exchange users.[2] If you deposited years ago, reopening the account does not make the next payment its first deposit.
The six checks to make before any money moves
- Identify the exact brand and product. Sportsbook, exchange, casino and bingo accounts may be connected in ways the promotion names explicitly.
- Recover the old account. Use official recovery tools rather than registering again.
- Open the live welcome-offer terms. Work from the operator page shown during your own session, not an old screenshot or offer roundup.
- Find the eligibility definition. Search for "new customer", "existing", "previously", "first deposit", "first bet", "one per" and "linked account".
- Check your history against every condition. Registration alone may matter, even if you never claimed the old offer.
- Get a clear answer before betting. If the page does not settle it, ask support and save the reply.
The full terms should be easy to access, according to ASA guidance.[5] Save the version you read, including the date and the offer name. Promotions change. A generic support article copied into your notes without its date or context is weak evidence.
What to ask bookmaker support
Ask a narrow eligibility question. Do not ask whether the account "should be fine". Give the facts needed for a useful answer and avoid sending payment details or identity documents in ordinary chat unless the operator's secure process asks for them.
Hello. I previously held an account under this email address and I am looking at [exact offer name]. Before I deposit or place a bet, please confirm whether this account is eligible for that welcome offer. Please also confirm whether my previous registration, deposit or account on [named related product, if relevant] affects eligibility.
If support says yes, ask where the offer will appear and whether a code or opt-in is required. Save the transcript with the time, agent name or reference number, and a copy of the live terms. Then check that your account shows the offer before placing the qualifier.
If support says no, accept the answer and move to an existing-customer offer or another operator where you are genuinely new. There is no sensible matched-betting profit in arguing with a clear eligibility rule after money has moved.
If support cannot answer, do not deposit speculatively. Escalate the question once if the operator offers a promotion team, then leave the offer alone if the answer remains vague.
Do not solve uncertainty with a second account
Opening another account is not an eligibility check. It can breach the operator's account rules and put offers, bets and withdrawals under review. bet365's current terms permit one account and say offers and offer winnings on a duplicate account may be treated as void.[3]
- Do not vary your name, address, date of birth, email or phone number to avoid a match.
- Do not use another person's identity, bank card or betting account.
- Do not assume a different device or internet connection changes your customer history.
- Do not create an account for a partner and operate it yourself.
- Do not deposit merely to see whether the bonus arrives.
If a genuine duplicate exists by mistake, stop using both accounts and contact the operator. Explain what happened without inventing a story. Ask which account to retain and how any balance will be handled.
Keep a simple account-history record
A spreadsheet row is enough. Record the brand, operator or named product group, email used, approximate registration date, whether you ever deposited, whether you claimed a welcome offer, and the account's present state. Add the support reference and the date you checked the terms.
This is not a blacklist and it does not need passwords. Never store card numbers, identity scans or security answers in an ordinary betting spreadsheet. The purpose is to remember what you did, not to create a second copy of sensitive account data.
Outplayed can help you find current offers and follow matched-betting steps. The bookmaker's live terms and account record decide whether an old account is eligible.

COMMON QUESTIONS
Old account and welcome-offer FAQs
Does closing a bookmaker account make me a new customer later?
Usually not. A closed account can remain part of the operator's customer history. Check the current offer's definition and ask support before depositing.
What if I registered but never deposited?
You may still be an existing customer if the terms use previous registration or account ownership. A first-deposit offer can have a different test, so read the complete eligibility wording.
Can I open a new account with another email address?
No. A different email does not make you a different person, and a second account may breach the operator's duplicate-account rules.
Does an old exchange account affect a sportsbook offer?
It can. SBK's current welcome-offer page, for example, excludes existing Smarkets Exchange users. Other operators define linked products differently.
What if support says I am eligible?
Save the reply and the live terms, then confirm the offer is visible or active in your account. Follow the named deposit, opt-in, first-bet and deadline conditions exactly.
What should I do if I am not eligible?
Use genuine existing-customer offers or move to an operator where you have never held an account. Do not create or operate a duplicate account.
