A holiday does not make your UK betting accounts portable. You may find that some sites open normally, some allow login but not betting, and others block access altogether. The answer depends on your physical location, local law and each operator's permissions and terms.
The sensible matched-betting plan is to check before travelling and pause when the answer is unclear. A VPN that makes you appear to be in Britain does not change where you are. It can hide the very fact the operator needs to assess.
The short answer
You can do matched betting abroad only when both the law in your current location and every relevant operator permit it. That includes the bookmaker and the betting exchange. Access to an odds tool does not grant permission to place either half of the bet.
The Gambling Commission says operators need to know where customers are located so they can act legally and compliantly.[1] This is not merely a question of whether a website happens to load on hotel Wi-Fi.
- If the destination and both operators clearly permit use, follow their location and account instructions.
- If one operator blocks betting, do not place the other side and hope to repair it later.
- If the rules are unclear, ask the operator before travel or wait until you are home.
- Do not use a VPN, proxy or remote computer to disguise where you are.
A travel decision tree
Run the check separately for every bookmaker and exchange you intend to use. A brand may operate in your destination through a local company without allowing a UK account to move across to that service.
- Is online betting lawful where you are physically located? Check an authoritative local source. UK regulation does not replace the destination's law.
- Does the UK account permit use there? Read current terms and location help, then contact support if the answer is not explicit.
- Can both sides be placed? A bookmaker yes and exchange no is still a no for matched betting.
- Does the offer remain eligible? A permitted login does not prove a UK promotion applies abroad.
- Can you verify accepted bets normally? If location checks, app permissions or connections make confirmation unreliable, pause.
Bet365's terms tell customers to determine whether use is prohibited in their home jurisdiction or current location and not to use the service when it is prohibited.[4] Smarkets likewise places responsibility on customers to avoid breaching applicable law in their jurisdiction.[2]
Why a VPN is not the answer
A VPN has ordinary privacy and security uses. The problem here is using one to present a false location to a gambling operator. That turns a clear location block into a hidden rules problem, while the local law remains exactly the same.
Smarkets lists disguising or interfering with an IP address, including using a VPN to disguise location, among its prohibited activities.[2] Bet365 says it does not support VPN software because it needs to ensure the customer is not in a country where gambling is prohibited.[3]
Do not use remote desktop software to control a computer left in Britain either. Your fingers and device may appear elsewhere in the technical chain, but you are still accessing the account while physically abroad. Nor should a friend place bets for you. That creates account-sharing, identity and payment problems on top of the location issue.
Matched betting relies on two accepted positions. If an operator reviews, rejects or restricts one side because the connection concealed your location, the other position does not politely disappear. It remains an ordinary bet with real exposure.
What to do before you leave
- Finish open offers. Do not travel with a qualifying bet settled but a reward still waiting if its deadline may expire while you are away.
- Record open bets. Keep event, market, stake, odds, exchange liability and settlement time in your tracker.
- Check withdrawals. If you expect a payment or verification request, make sure your registered contact details and documents are accessible without sharing them.
- Read location help. Save the operator's current answer or support transcript with the date and destination.
- Set a pause date. Stop starting new offers early enough to let both sides settle before departure.
The safest travel routine is boring: settle, reconcile, withdraw spare working capital if appropriate, and leave no expiring token behind. The free-bet expiry guide has a deadline checklist.
If you already have open bets
Travel can begin while a football match is postponed, a racing market is unsettled or an exchange order is still unmatched. Do not solve this by hiding your location.
- Check the accepted bookmaker and exchange positions in the records you made before departure.
- If you can lawfully access both accounts and the operators permit it, verify status without changing anything unnecessarily.
- If access is blocked, contact the operator through its official support route and explain that you are temporarily abroad.
- Do not place an improvised local or third-party bet to make the screen look balanced.
- Keep support messages and settlement records for reconciliation when you return.
If the issue involves an unmatched exchange remainder, follow the accepted-stake logic in the partial-match guide. If you cannot lawfully access the platform to act, support is the route. Evasion is not.
Temporary holiday versus moving abroad
A fortnight away and a permanent move are not the same account event. Some operators give travellers a support route, while permanent relocation can require closure of the old account and registration through a locally available service.
Bet365's UK help says customers who are temporarily away or on holiday and cannot access their account should contact support. The same page says a permanent move to an unavailable location can lead to closure, while a move to an available location may require a new account registered there.[3]
Do not register a new local account with a hotel address or borrowed details. A local version of a familiar brand can be a separate operator with its own eligibility, identity and banking requirements. Honest residency information matters more than keeping a matched-betting streak alive.
Login, betting and withdrawals are different
An operator may allow account login for support or withdrawal while refusing new bets. Treat those permissions separately. Being able to see a balance does not prove you can place a qualifying bet, claim a promotion or use the exchange.
Likewise, a failed app location check is not an invitation to switch to the mobile website until something slips through. Ask support what is permitted from your current location. Keep the reply. If the operator says withdrawals are available but betting is not, use only the allowed account functions.
This distinction also avoids unnecessary panic. A block does not automatically mean the account or balance has vanished. It may be a location restriction requiring support. The KYC and withdrawal guide explains how to respond with records rather than repeated workarounds.
A simple pause-and-return routine
- Stop new offers before travel.
- Reconcile bookmaker cash, exchange balance and open liability.
- Save offer terms and accepted-bet records.
- While away, do nothing unless local law and both operators clearly permit it.
- On return, log in from your normal connection and check for unsettled bets, messages and expired rewards.
- Restart with one ordinary back-and-lay pair, not several time-sensitive offers.
If travel is frequent, build pauses into your weekly matched-betting routine. Profit does not depend on maintaining an unbroken daily run. Missing one offer is cheaper than creating an unhedged position or an avoidable account review.
Keep research separate from betting permission
You may be able to read guides or prepare a list of offers while away, but check each service's own access rules. An odds match on a screen is only research until both gambling operators lawfully accept the intended bets.
When you are back and permitted to bet, Outplayed can help you resume with matched prices and calculator figures. It cannot override location law or an operator's terms.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Matched betting abroad FAQs
Can I do matched betting on holiday?
Only if the law where you are, the bookmaker, the exchange and the offer terms all permit it. If any answer is unclear, pause and ask support.
Can I use a VPN for matched betting abroad?
Do not use a VPN to disguise your location. It does not change local law and can breach operator terms.
Can I ask someone at home to place the bets?
No. That risks account sharing and identity problems, and you lose direct control over accepted stakes and odds.
Can I withdraw money while abroad?
Possibly, but login, withdrawal and betting permissions can differ. Use the operator's official support route to confirm what your account can do from that location.
What if one side of my match is already placed?
Do not disguise your location or place a casual substitute. Check your accepted records and contact the blocked operator for the permitted route.
Can I open an account in the country I visit?
A holiday address does not make you a resident. Local operators may require local residency, identity and payment details. Never provide borrowed or false information.
