The old answer to Smarkets versus Betfair was easy: Smarkets charged 2% while many Betfair customers expected 5%. That comparison is now stale. Smarkets' Standard Tier is 2% of net profit per market, and Betfair's Basic package in My Betfair Rewards is also 2% of net market winnings.[1][2]

So which betting exchange is better for matched betting? Usually, the one offering the lower lay price with enough money available for your whole stake. If both exchanges show the same odds, depth and 2% commission, the calculation is the same. Smarkets has a worthwhile temporary 0% offer for eligible new customers. Betfair may be the better home for a particular market or stake. Keeping both accounts available lets the numbers decide.

That is my practical verdict. Do not choose an exchange as if buying a football shirt. There is no prize for loyalty, and the best option can change between matches.

Smarkets vs Betfair commission

Smarkets charges Standard Tier customers 2% on net profit in each market. Betfair charges commission on net winnings in a market, with 2% used for its Basic Rewards package. Neither charges ordinary commission when that market finishes at a net loss.[1][2]

Three-card exchange comparison covering account commission, lay price and the stake available to be matched.
Commission, lay price and available stake all affect which exchange gives the better matched-betting result.

For an ordinary beginner using those settings, there is no headline commission winner. Check the rate shown inside your account before calculating a lay bet, rather than assuming an old article still applies.

The edge cases matter mainly to very active or unusually profitable exchange users. Smarkets says its 1% Pro Tier applies to individual winning and losing bets, and its 3% Select Tier can apply after more than £25,000 net profit over the previous 12 calendar months.[1] Betfair now calls its additional high-profit charge the Expert Fee. It says fewer than 0.5% of customers incur it and that an account is considered only when its last 52 active-week gross profit exceeds £25,000, alongside further conditions.[2]

Those charges deserve a proper read if you reach the thresholds. They are not a reason for a beginner converting a £20 free bet to panic.

A checked £20 example

Suppose you have a £20 stake-not-returned free bet, use back odds of 3.00 and find lay odds of 3.00. At 2% commission, the equalised lay stake is £13.42, the liability is £26.85 and the calculated result is about £13.15 either way. At a genuine 0% commission rate, the lay stake is £13.33, the liability is £26.67 and the calculated result is about £13.33.

The temporary commission saving is therefore about 18p in this deliberately neat example. A move in the lay odds from 3.00 to 3.05 can matter more. Use the Matched Betting Beast Ultimate Calculator with the actual rate, odds and stake accepted on your account.

Liquidity and lay price matter more than the logo

Liquidity is the money available to match your bet at each price. An exchange can display attractive odds but have only £3 waiting there. If you need to lay £40, the remaining £37 may be matched at worse odds, sit unmatched or never become a bet.

Smarkets says insufficient liquidity can leave a bet unmatched or partially matched, with only the matched portion standing.[3] Betfair gives the same essential warning: an offer may be unmatched, partially matched or matched in full, and there is no bet until another customer matches it.[4]

This is why blanket claims such as "Betfair always has more liquidity" or "Smarkets always has better odds" are not useful enough. Check the exact event, selection, market, settlement rules and stake at the moment you are ready to bet. Major football match odds may look healthy on both. A niche player market, lower-league fixture or racing place market may not.

The screen should answer two questions before you place the bookmaker bet:

  • What lay odds are available for the whole calculated stake?
  • Will the lay be matched now, rather than merely submitted?

If one exchange has 2.90 available for the complete stake and the other has 3.00, the 2.90 price usually beats a small commission difference. Put both sets of figures into the calculator and compare the final result.

How to avoid a half-matched lay bet

A partial match is not administrative trivia. It leaves part of the bookmaker bet uncovered.

Checklist covering event, market, lay price, available depth and fully matched status before a bookmaker bet.
A five-part check for matching the correct exchange market and confirming the complete lay stake.
  1. Choose the identical event, selection and market on both sides.
  2. Enter the live lay odds and your account's commission in the calculator.
  3. Inspect the amount available at those odds.
  4. Place the bookmaker bet only when you are ready to submit the lay immediately.
  5. Open your exchange bets and confirm the full stake says matched.

If only part matches, calculate the remaining exposure before doing anything else. Do not simply repeat the original full lay stake. Cancel only the unmatched remainder, then recalculate the balance at the new available price. The Outplayed tools guide explains the separate jobs performed by an oddsmatcher and a calculator.

Smarkets also offers a Fill or Kill order that cancels the request if the whole bet cannot be matched immediately. It can prevent an unwanted partial fill, but it does not conjure liquidity or reserve a price. A rejected order still leaves you needing another route.

Interface, app and day-to-day use

Both exchanges support mobile use. Smarkets documents dedicated iOS and Android trading apps with exchange functions such as keeping bets in play and trading out.[7] Betfair's app directory lists mobile options for iPhone, iPad, Android and Windows, as well as separate exchange and third-party tools.[8]

For matched betting, the best interface is the one you can check accurately under mild time pressure. Look for:

  • clear separation between back and lay prices;
  • the available amount beside the selected odds;
  • liability shown before confirmation;
  • a visible matched, partial or unmatched status;
  • an accessible list of open bets and settled markets.

Smarkets has a clean exchange-first presentation. Betfair has a broader exchange ecosystem and more routes into specialist software, but extra features are not automatically useful. A beginner needs a reliable lay ticket and an unmistakable status screen before needing trading ladders or automation.

Try both with small stakes. A polished app cannot rescue the wrong market, and a crowded screen is harmless if you know exactly where the matched amount appears.

The Smarkets 0% commission offer

Smarkets currently advertises code COMMFREE for 0% commission during 60 days for eligible new UK, Irish and Maltese users. Its terms require a first deposit of at least £10 or €10 by debit card or Instant Banking, and the code must be entered during registration.[9]

The timing is easy to misread. The 0% rate applies to eligible bets that settle within 60 days of the first deposit, not merely bets placed before day 60. Smarkets also excludes API and trading-software customers from this welcome offer and limits it to one qualifying sign-up under its full terms.[9]

That can make Smarkets cheaper during the promotional window. It does not guarantee the better lay price, enough liquidity or a better final conversion. Confirm the code and terms on the official page before opening the account. We do not have a separate Smarkets referral arrangement here, so the source link below goes directly to Smarkets without pretending otherwise.

Where Outplayed fits

Outplayed's Oddsmatcher can compare exchange prices more quickly than opening several tabs and searching manually. The calculator then turns the chosen lay odds, stake and commission into a lay stake and liability. You still need to confirm the event, market, available amount and matched status on the exchange itself.

COMPARE LAY ODDS WITH OUTPLAYED

The paid service earns its keep when it saves enough searching and checking time to justify the fee. If you are starting from scratch, read what matched betting is before opening several accounts. If you already understand back and lay bets, compare the final calculation rather than chasing whichever exchange happens to appear first in a guide.

Which exchange should you use?

  • If you have eligible 0% Smarkets access, check Smarkets first, then compare the complete lay price and available stake.
  • If both show the same odds and enough liquidity, the calculation is effectively tied at the same 2% rate. Use the interface you handle more confidently.
  • If one has a lower lay price for the full stake, calculate that exchange first. The better price may outweigh a commission difference.
  • For a thin or specialist market, use whichever exchange can match the whole stake under identical rules.
  • If you place bets away from a desktop, test both apps with small stakes and keep the clearer status workflow.
  • If you become a high-volume or high-profit trader, read the current tier and Expert Fee rules inside both accounts before choosing.

For most matched bettors, having both accounts is more useful than declaring one permanent winner. Fund them sensibly, compare before each lay and avoid scattering so much money across exchanges that your bankroll becomes difficult to track.

Five exchange mistakes worth avoiding

  • Using the advertised commission blindly: your account tier or temporary promotion may differ.
  • Comparing different markets: "90-minute result" and "to qualify" do not settle the same way.
  • Reading odds without depth: the displayed price may cover only a fraction of your stake.
  • Assuming submitted means matched: confirm the full amount in the open-bets screen.
  • Chasing a tiny saving: a penny of theoretical improvement is not worth rushing into the wrong selection.

The same discipline applies to price boosts: identical markets, accepted prices and a checked final calculation beat a tempting headline.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Smarkets vs Betfair FAQs

Which exchange has lower commission?

Smarkets Standard and Betfair Basic are both stated as 2% on net winnings in a market. Eligible new Smarkets customers may get 0% for 60 days with COMMFREE, subject to the current terms. Check the rate shown in your own account.

Does Betfair still charge 5%?

Do not use 5% as a blanket UK assumption. Betfair's published charges use 2% for the Basic My Betfair Rewards package. Other locations, packages, market types and high-activity charges can differ, so check your account.

Which exchange has better liquidity?

It varies by event, market, price and time. Compare the amount available for your complete lay stake when you are ready to bet. A general reputation is not a substitute for checking the live market.

Do I need both Smarkets and Betfair?

No, but having both gives you another price and liquidity source when one market is thin. Beginners can learn on one exchange, then add the second once they can reliably check market names, liability and matched status.

Which is easier for beginners?

Smarkets often feels simpler because it is exchange-led. Betfair has a wider tool ecosystem. Try each with a small stake and choose the screen on which you can most confidently identify lay odds, available money, liability and confirmation.

What if only part of my lay bet matches?

Cancel the unmatched remainder if appropriate, leave the matched portion alone and recalculate the uncovered amount at the new odds. Never place the original full lay stake again, because that can create excess exposure.

Is the Smarkets COMMFREE offer automatic?

No. The current page says eligible users must enter COMMFREE during registration and make a qualifying first deposit. Read the official terms before signing up because eligibility and promotions can change.
